| Laptop batteries can be of 3 types - Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium Ion (LiON). They differ in cost, weight and specific features.
Lithium Ion (LiON) batteries are usually recommended to use in technically advanced makes of laptops. These batteries have enough power to run laptops as well as accessories, such as MP3 players, DVD players and USB devices.
They are lighter than NiCd and NiMH laptop batteries and have no memory defect.
If used in the proper way, lithium ion batteries are expected to run for about three years, but it is essential to point out that the three-year period of time begins as soon as batteries are actually made and not when they are actually exploited. A battery requires to be changed when the laptop cannot work any longer unless connected to the supply of electricity via an adaptor. Below are several guidelines to prolong pc battery's life.
• Avoid frequent complete discharges, since this puts added strain on a battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are preferable for lithium-ion batteries than a complete discharge. Recharging partly charged LiON batteries does not cause harm, because there is no memory. Reduced laptop battery's life in a laptop primarily hinges upon the heat rather than charge - discharge patterns.
• It is advisable to fully discharge a laptop battery after thirty charges. Otherwise, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less precise and can cause a premature cut-off of the pc.
• Use cooling devices (readily available on the market) for the pc temperature to comply with the established requirements.
• Consider removing a pc battery from a laptop when it is run on a fixed power. (Some laptop producers express concern for moisture and dust that pile up inside the laptop battery casing.)
• Avoid purchasing spare lithium-ion batteries for later use. Pay special attention to dates of manufacture. Never purchase old stock, even if it is sold at lower prices.
• If you have a spare lithium-ion pc battery, deploy one to the full and keep the other one cool by placing it into the fridge. Do not freeze the pc battery. For optimal results, store the laptop battery at 40% state-of-charge.
